The Romantic Unheated Blue Sapphire Ring

No one said that diamonds were a necessity in creating your perfect engagement ring. And that was the wish of this client, who wanted a simple, romantic design which they could call their own.

The devil is in the construction and detailing of this ring. Unlike the typical construction of a ring that uses at least 2 or more separate pieces/parts of gold to create, this ring design uses only 1 long strip of intertwining gold. This symbolises the love between 2 people; and for each other. There is no breakage nor joining of gold in the construction of this ring design. It is a simple, organic and very clean look for this unheated sapphire ring. After all, the intensity of this royal blue sapphire speaks for itself.

Saturated unheat blue sapphire in 18K Pink Gold

A truly unique engagement ring. Medium electric blue unheat sapphire in a 18K pink gold setting. Not very obvious at first glance that it is set in 18K pink gold. However, do a quick flip of the finger, and the subtle hint of pink gold becomes obvious. The devil is in the details.

This saturated “electric” blue sapphire has a slightly “creamy” lustre and a colour so intense, it beautifully complements that pinkish hue of the ring setting.

Unheat sapphires in this intense blue colour in large sizes (sizes larger than 4 cts) is becoming so increasingly difficult to source. When one chances upon this shade of intense “electric” blue, size and shape as determining criteria start to take a backseat. Quality of a fine gemstone is determined largely by colour, clarity and lustre.

You simply cannot say no to this

No, we cannot get enough of this medium electric blue seen in this unheated blue sapphire. This shade of blue for unheated sapphires is becoming extremely difficult to source – regardless of size.

If you chance upon this, grab it while you still can. It won’t be long before availability becomes an issue, even if money is not!

Styled in ever classic diamond halo design because the blue already stands out so well on its own – what more could a lady ask for?

When a blue sapphire ring is not an engagement ring

A sapphire ring does not necessarily always have to be an engagement ring.

And so a client of ours decide to pamper herself with an unheated sapphire ring. She was looking for a nice medium vibrant blue. After viewing our selection of unheated sapphires, she set her heart on a particular piece of cushion shape, 2.16ct blue sapphire. It really is very pretty both under natural daylight and artificial shop lighting.

Not quite sure of the design she wanted, we provided her some design options that would complement both herself and something that would work for the gemstone itself. (i.e.: not all designs are suitable for every gemstone as it depends on the shape and colour of the gem).

She wanted something suitable for more regular wear but nothing too ostentatious – yet still sparkly and pretty. Somewhat like a cocktail ring or dressier, but nothing too chunky.

After discussions and measurements, she had finally decided on the design of her ring.

Heat or Unheat

In recent years, supply of medium to fine quality rubies have dwindled to almost a standstill. When we say medium quality, the bare minimum standards that the gemstone must meet are at least:

  • Eye-clean
  • Good Lustre
  • even colour, especially when viewed top-down (looking down at the table/face of the gem)

Last but not least, the all-important factor, and deal-breaker: whether the gem is heated or not. Please note that some jewellers may tell you that a gem is natural. This does not mean that the gem is unheated. To them, “natural” means that there is no external material being introduced into the gemstone. However, the fact remains that heating of gemstones is a process carried out to enhance the colour of the gem, without which, the original colour of the stone will look lacklustre or less vivid or less intense.

A good example as below:

Heat treatment is typically used to enhance colours of a gem and may also be used to improve clarity of the gem. As such, most aesthetically beautiful gemstones commonly seen in jewellery shops are have been heated.

Why we disclose to clients if a gem has been heated or not heated: simply because heated gemstones command a different price to unheated gemstones. Also, unheated and beautiful gemstones appreciate in value the quickest and hold their value the longest. Without a doubt, if money is no issue, beautiful unheated gems are the way to go.

In this case then, does this mean that all unheated gemstones are not as gorgeous and beautiful as heated gemstones? No, this is where our specialty lies. Our clients come to us to source for unheated, yet beautiful gemstones.

Approximately 85% of all gemstones available in the market are heated. Of the remaining 15% that is unheated, possibly only 35% – 40% of these are aesthetically beautiful. Naturally, a premium is paid for unheated, yet gorgeous gemstones.

Unheated Blue Sapphire Earrings

Above is an example of commissioned work to our discerning client who appreciates the true meaning of fine quality gemstones.

A pair of esteemed, unheated blue sapphire earrings set in 18K white gold and diamonds. Beautiful, eye-clean, 100% natural unheated gemstones are becoming increasingly rare. So rare, that sometimes jewellers tell clients that unheated sapphires/gemstones do not exist. Indeed, this pair of blue sapphires meets all these requirements.
